From early childhood to lifelong learning

Tampere region offers the best of Finnish high-quality education from early childhood to higher education across all municipalities in the area. We want to make sure, that every student receives a personalized, holistic education that prepares them for future studies or employment. Pre-primary, basic, and secondary, and vocational education are free of charge, and even after that, education is mostly free. The goal is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to receive an education and fully realize their potential, regardless of the family income

The Tampere region provides a high-quality education system from early childhood to higher education. Starting with play-based early childhood education, followed by student-centered basic and secondary education, it nurtures critical thinking and creativity. Pre-primary and basic education, upper secondary school, and vocational training are all completely free of charge. Afterward, students can choose between academic or vocational paths, focusing on real-world skills and lifelong learning. The Finnish school system has no “dead ends” — students can always continue, with extensive opportunities for further education.

Early childhood, pre-primary and basic education

In Tampere, early childhood and pre-primary education lay the groundwork for lifelong learning. They on play-based, student-centered learning, which fosters curiosity, social skills, and emotional development in a safe and nurturing environment. Compulsory basic education, which includes primary school and grades 1–9,is mainly provided in city-maintained comprehensive schools and offers instruction for both pupils requiring special support and multilingual students. Tampere region offers multilingual options, available languages include Finnish, Swedish, English, French, German, and other languages, depending on the specific program and municipality.

Secondary education

After compulsory studies, after the age of sixteen, students can choose general upper secondary school (lukio) or vocational education, both offering paths to higher education or the workforce. Lukio includes options like science, arts, and IB programs, while vocational schools like Tredu provide practical, industry-focused training. Multiple language options and close industry ties ensure students are well-prepared for future careers.

Vocational adult education and reskilling

Tampere offers excellent opportunities for adults who want to update their skills, change careers or gain new professional qualifications. Vocational adult education programmes are designed especially for working-age adults and international professionals seeking learning and reskilling opportunities. A key provider in the region is Tampere Adult Education Centre TAKK. TAKK trains over 12,000 students annually and offers vocational, further and specialist vocational qualifications across more than 20 professional fields, including technology and manufacturing, construction, social and health care, restaurant and catering services, cleaning and property services, and business and administration. Education is developed in close cooperation with companies and workplaces. Flexible study options, such as apprenticeship training and employment-focused training programmes, allow professionals to combine learning with work, update their skills and transition efficiently into new careers and employment.

Higher education

Tampere is Finland’s most student-friendly city, home to Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Together, they are creating a new model for higher education and research, offering diverse programs in fields like technology, health, and social sciences. Known for its excellence and multidisciplinary approach, Tampere University collaborates with institutions worldwide, providing rich opportunities also for postgraduate studies. Additionally, Tampere hosts Finland’s only Police University College (Poliisiammattikorkeakoulu), specializing in law enforcement education and training.

Lifelong learning
